God’s Shades of Grace

Wherever you are… wherever you’re headed… God is already there.
He sees it all. He knows what’s ahead and what’s behind.

These lyrics from a song from the 90’s by The Martins always stop me in my tracks. They’re a gentle reminder of something I sometimes forget: God’s grace is already at work—even before I realize I need it.

Have you ever watched a behind-the-scenes look at a movie set? Or maybe seen one of those documentaries where they break down how stunts are filmed? It’s amazing how much planning goes into just a few seconds of action.

If someone is jumping from a building or getting hit by a car (on purpose!), there are days—sometimes weeks—of careful preparation. Everything is choreographed: the fall, the timing, the landing. They’ve practiced how to fall. They’ve calculated the weight and force of the impact. And most importantly—there’s an airbag waiting at the bottom, filled just right to absorb the fall and protect them.

That image, believe it or not, reminds me of God’s grace.

In 1 Corinthians, we’re told that in every situation we face, there is a way to bear it. That’s grace. It’s God saying, “I saw this coming. I’ve already made a way.”

So when I find myself free-falling through circumstances I didn’t choose—things that are out of my control—I try to remember that I’m not falling alone. God has already prepared a cushion of grace just for me, measured and timed perfectly.

It might not always feel soft. It might not look like what I imagined. But His grace is there. Always. Exactly when and how I need it.
